THE PHILOSOPHY GROUP IS CURRENTLY ON HIATUS, BUT WE DO STILL RUN AN OCCASIONAL PHILOSOPHY CAFE — CHECK THE EVENTS PAGE FOR LISTINGS

The philosophy group is an occasional reading group, which meets to discuss works of philosophy – ancient, modern, and contemporary!

We have been meeting, on and off, since 2013. In the past we have read books by Plato, Aristotle, Lucretius, Rousseau, Nietzsche, and others (see below for a complete list). Our discussions are always great fun, and no background in philosophy is needed – only an interest in big ideas! To join in, email tim@fullersbookshop.com.au.

A complete list of the books we’ve read:

Plato, Early Socratic Dialogues (2013)
Lucretius, On the Nature of Things (2013)
Aristotle, The Eudemian Ethics (2013)
Alasdair MacIntyre, After Virtue (2013-14)
William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience (2014)
Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil (2014)
Rousseau, Reveries of the Solitary Walker (2014)
Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy (2015)
Augustine, Confessions (2015)
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations (2016)
Montaigne, The Essays: A Selection (2016)
Rousseau, Confessions (2016)
Seneca, How to Keep Your Cool (2019)
Wendell Berry, The World-ending Fire (2019)

In 2014-15, the Philosophy Group took a break from philosophy (narrowly construed) to read through the complete works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, as well as a selection of plays by Aristophanes. This was capped off with Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy (as above).
