Before the Mountain had a Name | school holiday workshop
Have you ever found a fossil?
If you live around Hobart, chances are you have!
Three hundred million years ago, Hobart was underwater and lots of different sea creatures called it home. Some of them are still with us today, preserved in stone. If you’ve ever been for a walk on the beach or in the foothills of kunanyi/Wellington it’s likely you’ll have come across them.
Join geologist Fiona Levings, author of Before the Mountain had a Name for a fun and informative workshop that takes a look at the history of Hobart as recorded in the rocks beneath our feet. Bring along your favourite fossil to share as we take a journey through time, from the bottom of the sea into the heart of a volcano. Along the way you’ll learn about the ancient animals and plants that used to call nipaluna/Hobart home and have a go at making your own colourful muffin-case brachiopods and fan-bryozoans.
Workshop suitable for children aged 6 – 12; limit of 10 participants.
