Tasmanian Plant Names Unravelled is the first comprehensive species-by-species guide to the origin and meaning of the scientific and common names of the 2,760 vascular plants native and naturalised in Tasmania.

Lavishly illustrated, this book will appeal to Tasmanian botanists, naturalists and gardeners. It will be equally useful in southeastern mainland States, which share much of the Tasmanian flora.

The name of every one of our plants tells a story: where it occurs, its habitat, what it looks like, who discovered it, what it can be used for, whether it is edible or poisonous, and many other things.

This book is an easy-to-read reference that explains the mysteries of botanical language in a non-technical way.

Mark Wapstra is a freelance ecologist, science writer and photographer with a lifelong passion for Tasmania’s natural history. After attending University of Tasmania, he became a government ecologist, specialising in forest-based conservation management and research. He now conducts his own environmental consulting business, using his “spare time” to undertake research and delve into the challenging world of taxonomy.

James Wapstra is a University of Tasmania graduate (Finance) now working in environmental consulting (with an interest in legislation and policy). He joins the Tasmanian Plant Names Unravelled family authorship team as researcher, writer and graphic designer, making this a three-generation project.

Hannah Moloney is a TV presenter on ABC’s Gardening Australia, permaculture practitioner, bestselling author and climate activist. When she has a quiet moment, you’ll find her in niplauna/Hobart gardening, playing ukulele (badly but happily), trail-running (badly but happily), doing more gardening and hanging with her delightful kid.
