Self-publishing has exploded in popularity recently, with names like Colleen Hoover and Andy Weir now well entrenched in the book world: self-published authors who hit the big time.

But what is it really like to self-publish your work? Is it for everyone? This event invites local writers and readers to hear about and discuss the realities of self-publishing with those in the know: local self-published authors and organisers of the yearly Tasmanian Indie Author Book Fair, Georgina Makalani and Tara Marlow.

Georgina Makalani started self-publishing fantasy and fiction in 2014 and has produced 18 novels, 10 novellas and a couple of short stories. She writes around a day job, a teenage daughter, and two crazy cats who like to lie across her keyboard.

Tara Marlow is an author of suspense and women’s fiction. When her nest emptied in 2017, she travelled for three years, working full time as a travel writer. Today, Tara lives in Tasmania, where she has pivoted her focus to fiction. She now has three novels and multiple short stories in print.

Georgina and Tara will share why they took this path, and what it means to self-publish today.

Booksellers also have unique insight into the all-important pointy end: ordering, display and sales! Fullers’ own Sophie Reid has been a bookseller in independent bookshops around Australia for many years – and is the director of the Derwent Valley Writers Festival for good measure. Sophie will add her incalculable experience to this lively chat, and discuss how it works from a bookshop’s point of view.

Join Georgina, Tara and Sophie for this information session, and be sure to bring your questions along.
