National Threatened Species Day: A Tasmanian Land Conservancy conversation

On 7 September 1936, just two months after the species was granted protected status, the last known Tasmanian tiger died from exposure at Hobart’s Beaumaris Zoo. National Threatened Species Day is now commemorated on that day each year to spotlight the animals, plants and ecosystems under threat, and reflect on our duty to protect them.

Over the past 200 years of European colonisation, more than 100 animal and plant species have been declared extinct in Australia. Currently, more than 1,700 species and ecological communities are known to be threatened and at risk of extinction.

The swift parrot. The platypus. The wedge tailed eagle. The Tasmanian devil. What can be done so that these species do not suffer the same neglect and fate as the fabled thylacine?

The Tasmanian Land Conservancy is a not-for-profit, apolitical, science and community-based organisation that raises funds from the public to protect irreplaceable sites and rare ecosystems by buying and managing private land in Tasmania. Andrew Darby, Nicole Gill, Pete Walsh and author and conservationist Jane Rawson will discuss the reality for some of Tasmania’s threatened species and places, and what we can do to safeguard them.

Andrew Darby is the author of Flight Lines and Harpoon: Into the Heart of Whaling, and former Hobart correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

Nic Gill is a Tasmanian author and conservation dog handler, who writes on nature, humans and other animals for both adults and children. She recently co-authored the fabulously titled Poo, Spew and Other Gross Things Animals Do.

Pete Walsh is founder of @hobartrivuletplatypus, a community organisation dedicated to the conservation and protection of Hobart’s urban platypus population. He was recently featured on the ABC program, The Platypus Guardian.
