This is both the launch of a new book and a whole new chapter in Tasmanian publishing: the new Tasmanian literary publisher, Evercreech Editions, is releasing its first title, My Heart at Evening by Konrad Muller.
Set on Tasmania’s remote northwest coast in the early 19th century, My Heart at Evening recreates the final days of colonial surveyor, artist and amateur botanist Henry Hellyer, whose 1832 suicide left many questions unanswered. This world of half-truth and outright lies becomes a lens through which to explore the personal costs of oppression, cruelty, and colonial violence. Told with lyrical intensity and formal innovation, the novel weaves together Hellyer’s suicide note with a haunting chorus of voices speaking across time.
‘A glossy black cockatoo of a book, as black as midnight, menacingly courtly, with mischievous scarlet flashes. Mephistophelian, brilliant.’ — Robert Dessaix
Konrad will be in conversation with Geordie Williamson to launch the book, and publisher Adam Ouston will be on hand.
