Fullers Bookshop, 131 Collins Street, Hobart, TAS 7000 In conversation with Katie McMahon. Alfie’s mum,…
Losing a loved one wreaks havoc with our lives. Sometimes the things that spring from grief are strange; sometimes they’re hilarious. Briohny Doyle and Adam Ouston talk with Jane Rawson about their two most-recent novels, Why We Are Here and Waypoints, which tackle grief through stories of flight, Houdini, and telepathic dogs.
Jane Rawson is the author of novels A History of Dreams, From the Wreck and A wrong turn at the Office of Unmade Lists, a novella, Formaldehyde, and the non-fiction book The Handbook: surviving & living with climate change. She is the managing editor at Island magazine and co-edited Breathing space, a collection of reflections and projections on nature in Tasmania.
Briohny Doyle is the author of Echolalia, Adult Fantasy and The Island Will Sink. Her books have been recognised on lists for The Miles Franklin Literary Award, the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards and The Melbourne Prize for Literature. Her writing has appeared in The Monthly, The Guardian, Meanjin, The Griffith Review, and The Age. She is a lecturer in creative writing at The University of Sydney, and a former Fulbright scholar.
Adam Ouston is a writer of fiction and non-fiction, and the recipient of the 2014 Erica Bell Literary Award as well as the manuscript prize at the Tasmanian Premier’s Literary Awards in 2017. He holds a PhD and has worked as a copywriter, editor and bookseller. As a musician he performs as Costume. He lives in Hobart.
