Homer’s Odyssey stands, along with the Iliad, at the beginning of Greek literature. The extent of its influence on European and global culture may make it seem familiar, but the very fact of its age and cultural remoteness mean that this is a profoundly alien poem.

For the next session in our Tim Talks series, Dr Graeme Miles will look at the brand new translation of the Odyssey by Emily Wilson (Norton, 2017) in order to discuss the nature of the poem as well as the mental lenses through which we read it. He will highlight some of the choices translators are forced to make in presenting these old words for modern readers.

Join Graeme for the third of our 2018 Tim Talks at Fullers Bookshop, 131 Collins St, Hobart.

Tickets are free but booking is essential as places may be limited.
